The Future of Internet

The next 20 years, by 2033, there might be more than 80 billion devices connected to the Internet [1]. In this post I proposed three key points that will change the internet technology from the current era.

The openness

The open source technology was well developed and impressively increased in quantity of products, apps and platforms. There is also a growth in open hardware technology. The giant in IT market like Google has released its Android to the community so they can contribute more. Other companies such as IBM, Redhat, and Canonical have invested in open source technology. Mozilla Firefox as the most used web-browser is also an open source technology succeeded the Netscape browser [2]. The current trend also shows significant increment on the use of opensource licence like MIT and GPL for public software. Choose the free and opensource license if you want to contribute to the future of the internet. Here is the guideline.

The mobile

The future is mobile. In this modern era, a big size laptop is not carry-able. People want a light and smaller device to connect to the internet everywhere they go. The first mobile phone with Internet connectivity was the Nokia 9000 Communicator, launched in Finland in 1996 [3]. Since the day, the evolution of mobile technology increases exponentially. Nowadays, smartphone and tablet is the main device for mobile computing. Therefore, the future is mobile computing utilizing smartphone and tablet (or phablet, phone tablet). The technology of the internet in the mobile device is slightly different with the desktop use. The adjustment and performance of web browser in the mobile device will be a challenge among the web-based companies to gain the customer from the market. Mobile is the future of everything if you want to win the market. Make mobile apps of your software. Some companies also provide a free version of their desktop software like Microsoft for their mobile Office apps.

The cloud

The future is the cloud. It is no doubt that in the future, people will not bring their hard disk to go anywhere. They just need a cloud. The sizing and pricing offered by cloud companies will affect the customer to choose their cloud. File storing and synchronization is the main service of the cloud, but it could be improved for other services. The ease and facility of the cloud will be the other reason for the customer to decide what cloud they need to store their data.

Those are some key point of the future of internet which may change the internet technology in the next 20 years or less. The internet technology has been developed rapidly. Based on internet history, it will change fastly. If we don't take care of this changing, we will leave behind the technology. By mastering the technology, it will easier to get benefit from it.
